Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Environmental Appeals Board website. I hope you find the information here helpful as you learn more about our background, business, processes, Board members and staff.

During the late 80s and early 90s, thousands of Albertans were asked for their views on the protection, enhancement and wise use of land, water and other resources in the province; the result was the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

This Act created the Environmental Appeals Board to ensure that the administration of the Act dealt fairly with all parties affected by environmental approvals and enforcement matters, made by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. In 1995, the scope of the Board's mandate was expanded with the implementation of the Government Organization Act, Schedule 5, section 6, under which the Board can hear appeals of enforcement orders relating to Restricted Development Areas. The Board's purview was expanded in 1999 wtih the coming into force of the Water Act providing a mechanism for appealing water related approvals, licences, and enforcement matters. In April 2007, the Board's purview was further expanded allowing for appeals of compliance orders and administrative penalties under the Climate Change and Emissions Management Act.

The Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act was developed as a result of open discussion and clear communication and the success of the Board's work is dependent on the same qualities. The Board's members are all senior, experienced environmental or public hearing practitioners who are committed to use their experience and communication skills to resolve disputes fairly, impartially and efficiently.

It remains our goal to provide the public and the environmental community with the best possible access to information about what we do and what we've decided. Our Board recognizes the growing importance of new technologies and is committed to continuing to grow and keep abreast of how to best serve the needs of Albertans.
